SUMMARY:Wet Felting a Dragon's Eye Lantern
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, September 17th\, 2026 from 6 to to 7:30 pm \nCost: $40.00 – includes materials for one item. \nfor adults\, maximum 10 people \nInstructor: Ruth Langwieser \nYou will create a Dragon’s Eye Lantern using the basic techniques of wet felting. You will begin by laying out layers of carded wool in the colours of your choice\, placing the fibres in alternating directions to build strength and create an even surface. Using a circular resist (template)\, you will form a hollow shape. \nNext\, you will carefully pour warm\, soapy water over the wool and begin the felting process. Starting with gentle rubbing and light pressure\, you will gradually increase the amount of friction and pressure as the wool fibres begin to bond together. As the felt becomes stronger\, you will continue shaping it until it reaches a smooth\, firm\, and well-felted surface. \nOnce the felting is complete\, you will remove the circular resist through the opening you have created. You will then insert a balloon into the opening\, inflate and tie it\, allowing the felt to stretch into its final three-dimensional form. The lantern will dry over the inflated balloon\, creating a sturdy hollow structure into a striking dragon’s eye lantern. \nLearning Goals: \n\nUnderstand the basic principles of wet felting.\nLayer wool fibres in alternating directions to create a felt structure.\nUse warm\, soapy water and friction to bond wool fibres together.\nControl pressure and rubbing techniques throughout the felting process.\nCreate a hollow felt form using a resist (template).\nShape a three-dimensional lantern using an inflated balloon.\n\nPOLICIES: \nRefund: If you are unable to attend class for any reason\, please notify the Arts Council via text at 306-634-3942. SUMMARY:Tomatoes Tried to Kill Me But Banjoes Saved My Life
DESCRIPTION:All proceeds & artist fees from this concert will be donated to St. Joe’s Chemo Unit \nEveryone has a story. Your stories matter.  Keith Alessi was neither a performer nor a musician before taking to the stage – he was an accountant and corporate CEO of Westmore Coal Company! He now shares his unconventional true story of overcoming great obstacles including cancer and how the healing power of music brought him back home to himself.  The grass roots sound of the banjo lures you in and brings you back to a simpler time in life\, as Keith takes you on the journey of his story.  This show has been highly awarded and reviewed while touring internationally and has profoundly affected audiences everywhere.  Themes of forgiveness and the importance of pursuing your passions resonate throughout.  The variety of banjos that join him on stage are all characters and played important roles in his journey.  This is more than a show\, it’s a cause. \nKeith has never accepted any form of remuneration for his performances\, instead choosing to donate it to local charities and to Theatres in support of Artist development.  As of June 2026\, he has raised over $1.3 Million Dollars (CAD) for these causes. \n \n★★★★★“Storytelling at its best!”-PLAYBILL \n★★★★★“Anyone who loves an underdog story\, step this way and be ready to laugh and weep in equal measure.”-North West End UK \n★★★★★“His spell bounding\, heartwarming\, and completely inspiring story is related in a friendly\, folksy manner peppered with toe-tapping banjo music and a host of hilarious banjo jokes.” -Theatre Eddys (San Francisco)

SUMMARY:TIFF Movie "H is for Hawk"
DESCRIPTION:Saturday May 16\, 2026 – 4 pm – Orpheum Theatre \nCost: $10.00 \nH Is for Hawk is a 2025 biographical drama film directed by Philippa Lowthorpe\, who co-wrote the screenplay with Emma Donoghue\, based on the 2014 memoir by naturalist Helen MacDonald. It stars Claire Foy\, Brendan Gleeson\, Denise Gough\, Sam Spruell\, and Lindsay Duncan. The film tells the true story of Helen MacDonald who tends to a goshawk after the death of their father Alisdair. The film received generally positive reviews from critics. \n\nPlot\n\nH Is for Hawk chronicles Helen Macdonald’s experience of grief following the sudden death of their father and their decision to train a goshawk as a means of coping with that loss. The narrative interweaves two strands: Macdonald’s personal bereavement and the practical and psychological challenges of falconry. \nAfter their father’s death\, Macdonald retreats from their previous academic and social life and immerses themself in the demanding discipline of hawk training. They acquire a female goshawk\, named Mabel\, and devotes themself to the meticulous routines required to tame and hunt with the bird. The process is portrayed as both physically exhausting and emotionally consuming\, drawing Macdonald into an intense\, solitary relationship with the hawk and the wild instincts it embodies. \nAs Macdonald becomes increasingly absorbed in falconry\, they describe a gradual withdrawal from ordinary human concerns\, seeking refuge in the clarity and harshness of the natural world. This immersion brings moments of exhilaration and communion with nature\, but also exposes the limits and dangers of attempting to escape grief by erasing one’s humanity. \nWhile the book the movie is based on discusses Macdonald’s slow re-engagement with the human world\, the film itself ends while they are still in a half-wild state. The director Phillipa Lowthorpe shows Macdonald up to the point at which they are going through a subtle shift where they stop trying to be a hawk and begins to inhabit their own skin again\, even if they remain solitary still. The film focuses on the bruising realism of a person who has been changed by grief and nature\, rather than a Hollywood-style return to normalcy.
